Effect of Chronic Bronchitis on Changes in Pulmonary Function Caused by Irradiation of the Lungs.

چکیده
In a previous paper (Gillam, Heaf, Hoffbrand, and Hilton, 1964) it was shown that, contrary to widespread opinion, the presence of co-existing chronic bronchitis does not interfere with the treatment of bronchial carcinoma by radiotherapy. Patients with severe chronic bronchitis can be given the same dose of irradiation as those with mild bronchitis or with previously normal lungs. Survival after radiotherapy for bronchial carcinoma is not shortened by co-existing chronic bronchitis. The incidence of exacerbations of bronchitis both during and after radiotherapy is no more than might be expected in such a group of patients without irradiated lungs. Chronic bronchitis has also been suggested as an aetiological factor in the development of radiation pneumonitis and fibrosis (Warren, 1942; Widmann, 1942; Rubin, Andrews, Paton, and Flick, 1958). The clinical study described in our other paper suggests that this is not the case. Serial pulmonary function tests have been used to investigate these problems further and the results are reported here.

The study was conducted to determine the type, frequency and severity of gross, histopathologic changes, effect of route of infection and also, tissue tropism of serotype 793/B (4/91) infectious bronchitis virus. 20 day-old specific pathogen free chicks were inoculated intra-tracheally and intra-orally with 793/B serotype and lesions studied histopathologically at interval up to 10 days post-in...
متن کاملVertical gradients of lung density in supine subjects with fibrosing alveolitis or pulmonary emphysema.
Computed tomography was used to determine the vertical gradient of density in the peripheral lung tissue of 12 patients with histologically proved fibrosing alveolitis and 12 patients with chronic bronchitis and evidence of pulmonary emphysema on the computed tomograms. Measurements were made at total lung capacity and at residual volume and compared with similar measurements from 12 normal sub...
متن کاملComparision between effects of bicarbonate and acetate dialysates on spirometry parameters in patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis
Introduction: Chronic renal failure causes impairment of all body organs including heart and lungs. Main problem in these patients are pulmonary edema due to increased permeability of capillaries, intravascular and interstitial volume overload, hypertension and heart failure. These changes cause altered physiologic and mechanical function of lungs. The objective of this study is evaluating the ...

Abstract Background: Workers who exposed to cotton dust are at risk of some occupational lung diseases such as byssinosis and chronic bronchitis. In general respiratory symptoms like chronic cough, sputum and dyspnea are more common in cotton dust exposed workers. With continuous exposure, progression of disease and pulmonary dysfunction will happen. In this study, we assessed the effect of co...
